The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
