RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
