The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Rock Fans

It has been 20 years after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, offering everyday gamers the tools to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing someone who has mastered the epic lengthy instrumental break before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the display in time with the music. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable impact on numerous musicians featured, introducing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music because the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however when it was featured on the game young people were finding it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased in the US, meaning the game was a key medium of discovery for the group as they went on a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and related lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group more money compared to their records. It sold well over half a million copies upon release, and demand for their songs saw an increase significantly at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

The series continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by the game – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone played at double speed and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of top acts at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it threatened to overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority installments were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene active, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist with new generations.”
