The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
